My child has always made straight A’s and this year they are struggling. What is happening?
6th grade is a big transition year for most students. We tend to see a drop in grades the first quarter while the students adjust to the new environment and expectations. Give them to the end of the first quarter to fully adjust. Most of the time students find their feet by then, and you should see a difference in their performance. We know this is as difficult for the parents as it is for the students, but please be patient.
My child is in band. How are they supposed to handle homework and class work on days they have sectionals?
All students must let their teacher know that they will be missing that class BEFORE going to sectionals. At this time, all homework must be turned in before going to band sectionals, or it is counted as a late assignment. Any missed class work is the responsibility of the student to make up. If the student does not understand the assignment or has questions, it is their responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher. All of the teachers are willing to meet with students before or after school. Class work or homework assigned when your child is at sectionals does NOT receive an extra day to complete the work.
Is there anything my child can do if they receive an F on an assignment?
6 Red has the philosophy that an F does not mean fail, it means fix it or finish it. If your child receives an F due to an incomplete assignment, or it was of poor quality, they may correct the paper for partial credit in Social Studies, Science, and English. Social Studies allows for corrections on quizzes and tests as well. Each teacher will let the student know when the corrected assignment is due in order to receive partial credit.
My child does not complete their agenda all of the time. Is there a way for the parents to find out what the assignments for the day were?
On the 6 Red website there is a tab for homework. On that page there is a calendar with every assignment from every class. If there was a worksheet assigned, it will be attached to that day’s assignments as well.
What is the best way to contact a 6 Red teacher?
Email is the BEST way to contact a teacher on the team. All of the teachers’ email addresses are listed on the school website and 6 Red team website. Please do no hesitate to contact with your questions or concerns. Our instructional time is important for all the students on the team and the office will not interrupt during class for a phone call. We will answer your email ASAP.
My child is struggling with completing assignments at home and could use some extra help. Are there any after school options?
HMS has an after school tutoring program on Tuesdays & Thursdays until 4:00 p.m. There are teachers and volunteer student tutors there to give assistance on assignments. The program is free and there are forms available in the office . The program usually starts up towards the end of the first quarter. Please see the flyer on our Announcements page for more information.
We do not have internet access at our home. How do we handle this?
Much of our curriculum is online. All math assignments are turned in online. Students will still be required to turn homework in online, they will just need to do this portion of it at school. Students are to complete math homework in their notebook at home. Then either before school or at the beginning of math class that student can enter their answers online and submit. Science, ELA and Social Studies all have many online projects. All teachers allow ample time in class to work on these projects. It will be very important that your child use their time wisely in class. English has weekly online Khan assignments. ELP (Study Hall) or before Advisory is the best option to complete these assignments.
My child is talking about earning points for a VIP party. What is this all about?
Each quarter we have a VIP party. Students will be earning points all quarter long by turning in homework on time, not receiving behavior strikes, remembering supplies, meeting the AR Goal, etc. Each party will have a certain number of points to "purchase" that trip. Students will be told at the beginning of each quarter what that purchase price is. Students can also earn extra points for going above and beyond by being a good citizen. Teachers are always watching for this excellent behavior.
I have been calculating my child's grade on a calculator and it does not match what is on Power School. I think something is wrong.
Grades might be weighted. You can not calculate an accurate grade by just taking an average. Please refer to your teacher's individual Welcome Letters, or contact the content teacher directly for grade inquires.
